Tucson boy found with gun in backpack at school

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Authorities say a 6-year-old boy who took a handgun to Tucson school in his backpack has been turned over to state child welfare officials.

Tucson police say the unidentified child became ill late Thursday morning and was sent to the nurse's office at the Amphitheater district school.

As the boy was being prepared to be sent home, a staff member found the handgun in the backpack.

School officials called 911 and police came at the school.

The Arizona Daily Star says police discovered the father had a felony warrant for a parole violation.

He was arrested Thursday night and police say charges are pending. His name hasn't been released yet.

Investigators say the boy's mother was questioned and released.

They say it's still unclear who owns the gun.
