Man suing Buckeye, police over store takedown
PHOENIX ó A man who was taken down by police at a Buckeye store on suspicion of shoplifting is suing the city and its police department for $500,000.
The lawyer for Jerald Newman claims police used excessive force on his client last Nov. 23 at a Walmart store.
Attorney Todd Nolan says Newman was bloodied and suffered several scrapes in the incident that was captured on a cellphone.
Phoenix TV station KTVK reports that the video of a bleeding Newman face-down on the store's floor and being restrained by two police officers was shown on many news stations in Arizona and around the country.
The Maricopa County Attorney's Office didn't file any shoplifting charges against Newman.
Buckeye police decline comment on the suit, citing the litigation process.
