As Walmart gears up for its biggest shopping day of the year, thousands of its employees across the country are threatening to walk out on Black Friday.

Workers backed by labor unions said the action will cause significant disruption, potentially leaving stores in the hands of replacement employees.

"We really think it's a publicity stunt by the UFCW, by the labor unions," said Walmart spokeswoman Delia Garcia.

She expects only a small portion of employees to participate in the walkout.

At issue are wages, benefits and working conditions.

It's not a union stunt, Walmart just doesn't care about people, their feelings or their families, to make people work on the holiday's.

this is such BS there are so many people out of jobs that cannot afford to feed their families and these idiots are being babies and not wanting to work on black Friday. Duh, when you apply to work retail whether it is Walmart, Target or the mall....it's kinda a given YOU work on black Friday. Walmart should start firing people and hire people that really do want to work and want to earn a pay check. Sylvia from Chandler

    Re:walmart
if you dont want retailers to not be open during this time of Thanksgiving day, then dont go shopping on Thursday evening . The market dictates what is needed. If you want these employees to have these days off, then do go shopping during this period. They wont do what is unprofitable. The free enterprise has full control. These employees knew what was expected of them when they took they jobs. The Union just wants to get in there. Once that happens, say good bye to low prices.

    Really
Really Wily, You would think WalMart was the only retailer open on holidays. people just love going after WalMart without knowing a thing about the place. I had a friend right out of school that started working WalMart receiving and now has a very profitable career with them at the corporate offices. Working Manufacturing I have also worked in facilities that operate 24/7, no holidays off. My wife works health care and also does not get holidays days off either.

    Employees
I just love the WalMart attackers. I am not necessarily a fan of WalMart, but also respect it's place in the world as the world's largest private employer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walmart Additionally WalMart contributes a lot to local charities. "In 2011, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave $958.9 million in cash and in-kind contributions around the world." http://foundation.walmart.com/

    the best way to stop
Walmart, Target, KMart... is not to shop on Greed Thursday or Black Friday. If more people avoid these two days the stupid retailers would get a loud and clear message!

    Well said duaned
It is the free market that dictates this and folks just dont get it. Most of them complain to get legislation to stop retailers from opening on holidays. That is the best way to get the hours in line with the holidays. Shop during normal hours and this will change the Black Fridays and the late night Thanksgiving day hours.

This is not about having holidays off, this is about wage, benefits, and working conditions. The Unions/Employees are just using Black Friday as leverage to garner attention to their actual issues. It's a huge shopping day, and as others have said, hit the bottom line and the corporate big wigs will start to take notice. Personally I hope every employee scheduled walks out, it would be hilarious!
