FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- The Flagstaff ski season will be a little less dependent on Mother Nature this year.

The Arizona Snowbowl Resort began using its new snow-making machine on Tuesday.

Spokesman David Smith said the resort is expecting a packed ski season, in part because of the new equipment.

"It's going to be a boom to the Flagstaff economy," he said. "Everyone's going to know that we're going to have a reliable product year in and year out.

"It's going to be an exciting season with above-average snowfall predicted and it's very exciting because this is actually our 75th anniversary season."

Smith also said weather conditions have to be just right for snow-making.

"You have to look at what the outside air temperature is, what the relative humidity is, what the wet bulb temperature is, so there are alot of different variables you have to look at to see when you're able to produce snow."

The resort spent about $12 million on the equipment.

I will never ski there again
I hope people boycott what now should be called Snowbowel. THis snow is made from Flagstaff's treated sewage effluent and according to ADEQ regulations, it is now illegal to get any in your mouth, eyes, ears, or have it penetrate your skin. How absolutely disgusting!!!!!

    The whole story?
It's very concerning that the author and this news agency would leave out very important information regarding the years long controversy over Snowbowl snowmaking with treated sewage effluent. Snowbowl is set to be the only ski area in the world to make snow from 100% treated sewage effluent, an action which has raised serious concerns from environmental groups and Indigenous Peoples who hold the San Francisco Peaks holy. Next time please tell the whole story.

    Hack story
I love how the writer of this only used a Snow Bowl representative for their facts in this story. This land is public use land and SnowBowl is pissing all over the land. In order to do this they cut down 74 acres (approx 30,000 trees). This magic snow they are talking about is made with Sewage Effluent proven to contain harmful contaminants such as pharmaceuticals, hormones, and cancer causing agents. Boycott Snowbowl.

    NO SNOWBOWL
Snow bowl is fourteen miles outside of Flagstaff and does not pay taxes to flagstaff and despite the owners claims will not significantly contribute to the overall economy of flagstaff. Boycott snowbowl. Tell Ktar to not bow down to the owners who do not live in Arizona. Talk to people in Arizona for the voice of Arizona

    Finally!
Arizona will join the many resorts around the world using reclaimed water. Killington been doing it since the early 90's. Mt Hotham in Australia uses 90-95% reclaimed water and has for years! At last the environmental wackos and their 'superbugs' have been forced to see reason and Arizonans can enjoy a reliable snow season. What a bonus for the downtown businesses!! Yay Snowbowl!!! 75 more years!!!

    About time
Were have all the environmentalists and Indian Tribes been when Flagstaff has been pumping this same A+ rated water down the Rio de Flag each year? Do they only consider this water dangerous when it's being used to make snow and provide competition for Sunrise? Oh BTW, Sunrise has been making snow for years with dirty water. Where's their environmental study results they had done before they were able to make snow? Oh ya, they didn't have to do that on tribal land. Is it because they really don't care about the environment? Sure looks that way.
