Phoenix man gets 36 years for meat-cleaver attack

PHOENIX -- A Phoenix man accused of seriously wounding two people with a meat cleaver has been sentenced to 36 years in prison.

Maricopa County prosecutors said Qui Tu Truong, 28, received a 21-year prison sentence for attempted first-degree murder and a consecutive 15-year term for aggravated assault.

He pleaded guilty to both charges in October.

Police said Truong was irate over being fired from a Phoenix market in May 2011. They say he went to a condominium and attacked co-workers -- a 19-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman.

Authorities said Truong blamed the woman for his firing and attacked her first with the meat cleaver before wounding the woman's surrogate nephew.

Truong fled the condo after the attack, but was later arrested. Authorities say both victims still are recovering.
