PHOENIX -- After years of tension between the sheriff's office and Hispanic community, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Tuesday night after his re-election that he wanted to reach out to explain his immigration policy and how he handles the law.

Valley attorney and activist Daniel Ortega said he would welcome that move by Arpaio but he questioned the motives.

"He's the same guy that he has always been," he said. "Why he wants to reach out is speculative on my part."

Ortega said there is a great deal of disappointment, distrust and fear in the Hispanic community with the sheriff.

"Of course, we should take the opportunity to keep him from discriminating and racially profiling the Latino community," he said.

"Anything we can do to achieve that would be time well spent."

I met Arpaio once at my son's school.
He came and spoke to the kids about his MASH unit. Really nice guy. I shook his hand and had a picture taken with him. To say Arpaio "ingored the child rapists to go after cleaning ladies" is like saying Obama ignored the security requests of the Benghazi consulate so he could go campaign. It just didn't go down like that. They're just partisan attacks from bitter rivals.

    activist are not helpful
why dont the activist do something usefull like help immigrants cross the border the right way. If everyone would just cross the right way we wouldnt have illegal immigrants so I blame the activist and the aclu for not helping these immigrants do it the right way.

This may end up being a non issue
the way the stock market is reacting to the election of Obama. It keeps dropping, and we may all want to head south of the border in search of a better life, or at least to find a job. This Latino nonsense is going to be taking a back seat to the economy as round two of the recession looms on the horizon.
