PHOENIX -- The self-proclaimed toughest sheriff in America has won a sixth term after facing his most bruising re-election contest.

Republican incumbent Joe Arpaio was challenged by Democrat Paul Penzone and independent Mike Stauffer in Maricopa County sheriff's race.

The two retired officers who challenged Arpaio have accused metro Phoenix's longtime sheriff of focusing too heavily on investigations that bring him publicity and ignoring many of the law enforcement duties he was hired to do.

"I'm going to do what I've been doing," Arpaio said. "All policies stay and I'll continue to enforce all illegal immigration laws, however, I want to reach out to the Hispanic community."

He added he would run again in 2016.

In the county to the immediate south of metro Phoenix, Republican incumbent Paul Babeu won in his bid for a second term as Pinal County sheriff.

Babeu faced Democrat Kevin Taylor and independent Ty Morgan.

    according to people of superior intellect, us people in Arizona are just a bunch of idiots anyway for the way we voted. What else would you expect from a bunch of idiots. On the other hand Micho, how did Joe get voted back in when there were thousands of Latino voters ready to vote him out? Could it be that some of them are Arizona idiots as well, and voted for Joe?

    school of law enforcement, is the beneficiary of idol worship, not because he represents the best that law enforcement can give us. These things happen. The republican establishment will decide that Arpaio detracts in a big way from their long term expectations.

    how many multi-million dollar payouts to families of victims beaten to death in his jails is it going to take for true conservatives to realizes how much he is really costing us to have him as sheriff.

    Picked up more House seats , knocked off the two domestic violence candidates , your worst enemy wins overwhelmingly. When unemployment is higher than today , debt quadrupled the left will be screaming for common sense. Have you looked at the stock market today ? Also Jerry Lewis ( the scab ) got beat down. I think things are good . You got ? Obama , a gay in # 9 and Ann . Wait till she want to get married in your church !

    Lewis's loss to one of the Dems who are shrinking the republicans legislative majorities. Expect alliances between moderat republican and the Dem minority to dampen the rampant extremism we saw from the Republican legislature last term. Pleased as punch.
