Public memorial site to Shockley coming down

PHOENIX — A public memorial in Glendale of stuffed animals, candles, cards and notes that went up almost immediately after 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley vanished will be taken down.
Julie Frisoni with the City of Glendale said the family has been notified that the memorial in the area of 45th and Glendale avenues will be removed by the end of the month.
“If the family wants the items we will make certain they have them. The anniversary has passed. No one is caring for the memorial, which is in a state of disarray and it’s time to take it down.
“It’s blighted and if you ask neighbors the overall sentiment is that it’s time to take it down,” Frisoni said.
Jhessye Shockley’s mother, Jerice Hunter, has been charged with first-degree murder in the case even though a monthslong search of a massive landfill south of the Valley failed to find the body of the missing girl.
