PHOENIX -- Erika Andiola's mother was pulled over by Mesa Police Saturday night for speeding but Andiola believes there was another reason, a reason police said is irrelevant.

"According to the police she was going 50 miles per hour when it was supposed to be 40," Andiola told 92.3 KTAR's Jay Lawrence.

"I actually went to speak to one of the cops and he didn't even want to answer whether he stopped them or not because of the color of their skin but I honestly felt that was the reason why that happened."

Andiola added that her mother and two siblings who were also in the car were adamant that they weren't speeding. The family is Hispanic.

Mesa Police Detective Steve Berry said neither race nor SB 1070 played any factor in pulling over Andiola's mother.

"SB 1070 is political issue," Berry said. "We're not involved in politics. We're involved in law enforcement. If you took SB 1070 completely out of the equation the exact same thing would happened. It doesn't matter who you are. The same rules apply."

Andiola captured video of the traffic stop on her cellphone.

Andiola's mother, who is in the country illegally but is in the process of becoming a citizen, according to her daughter, was cited for not having any identification while driving and then released.

Early last week, Phoenix police made the department's first arrest under the "show your papers" provision.

    SB 1070
Maybe if you spent more time making sure the illegal had an ID and less time making false accusations about racial profiling none of this would have happened. If you want to stop the madness follow the rules. Carry required ID and obey the laws of the land you are trying to become a citizen of. I am sure if my black behind was stopped in Mexico for speeding and I had no ID it would not have been as civil as your mothers experience. So rather than blame SB 1070, blame your mom for breaking the law.

    A few questions
Did you approach the police and ask them in the middle of a lawful traffic stop if they stopped the car because she was Hispanic? Were you in the car when it was stopped when you already knew your mother was illegal and should not have been driving that car? If she isn't a licensed driver then she is not insured who will pay the bill if she hits or hurts someone than that legal citizen? I am sure some human rights group is already on the phone to come to your mothers rescue while the rest of us pay for the mistakes of those that should not be here to begin with.

    Questions
Mik3, well said. For a woman who is in the process of becoming a citizen you would think that she would be a little more prudent in her responsibilities, such as having a valid drivers license and/or state issued ID. But those details are much too trivial, the BIG issue here is her skin color, not her legal obligations. Thank god she didn;t plow into a group of children, but then again her family would blame that on SB 1070 also.

    Undocumented speeding
I suppose she thinks speeding is ok, it is an undocumented offense, not an illegal one. Give me a break. Someone could be caught robbing a bank and you will have someone else saying they were arrested because they were a suspected illegal alien. Anarchy... coming soon to a city near you.

    How dare they...
...pull her over for a traffic violation! I suspect it was their option to impound the car and perhaps arrest her...that's how it would have worked for most people...she turned getting a break into a civil rights issue...GBTM.

    good!
many years ago, back in the late 80's or early 90's i also got a citation for not having my license on me when i was pulled over for speeding. there was not 1070 back then and i'm as white as white can be. so don't say that she only got the citation because of the color of her skin! she got the citation because 1. she was speeding.. 2. because she didn't have identification. period.

    illegal mom
and if she were legal, she would have shown her ID, registration, and insurance card like every other person. Speeding is speeding. Oops, she should have been going the speed limit. Way to go MESA PD!
