SCOTTSDALE -- College women throughout the Valley are a little more nervous this weekend.

A convicted sex offender with an extensive history of sexually assaulting girls is on the loose.

Authorities are trying to track down the man, identified as Brian K. Downing.

Officers told ABC15 that police departments not just in Arizona, but across the country, have no idea where he is.

There are concerns Downing could show up at Scottsdale Community College or any of the many colleges around the Valley.

It's not believed police have a warrant for his arrest, but Downing has not checked in with authorities and his whereabouts are unknown.

In the past, police say Downing was found guilty of sexually assaulting three random women in Arizona.

He then moved to Oregon, where he sexually assaulted two more victims, including a 16-year-old girl.

Investigators say Downing's history of repeated sexual assaults makes him very dangerous.

He is not allowed on college campuses, and female students are wondering what more their schools can do to protect them.

"What can the school do to protect us, because we do get out pretty late here and it is pretty dark," wondered student Breeann Harger. "There are lights, but they obviously don't help."

Anyone with information on Downing is encouraged to contact police immediately.

    Hello- Picture?
If he is a convicted sex offender from ANYWHERE- there are pictures on file. I doubt he will be telling people his real name- any more than he would walk up and give his criminal history. It would help GREATLY to have a picture with this article!

How about letting students with concealed weapons permits carry their firearms on campus. At least they would have a chance if this scumbag attacks them. Google "Amanda Collins rape" She was a concealed permit holder who didn't carry because her university forbade it. She was brutally attacked by a serial rapist while she walked out to her car after her class. The attacker went on to rape and murder another coed shortly thereafter. Amanda Collins believes that had she been carrying that day she would have been able to stop the attack and possibly prevent the murder of another poor young girl.

    When will we
ever learn? Get this guy back in custody and inject the cocktail. Do society a favor and put this animal down. He will never be rehabbed. If some parole board lets him out again, he should be sentenced to babysitting their daughters.

    Get his name right!!
KTAR has his name wrong...Its Brian K Downer....NOT Downing. And shouldn't students be aware and cautious regardless if there is a sex offender on the loose or not? We need to quit be so reactive and more proactive. http://www.salem-news.com/articles/october072006/rape_suspect_10706.php http://www.offendex.com/zipdirectory/OR/97333/Brian_Kenneth_Downer_1325120 http://ktar.com/22/1577147/Warning-issued-to-colleges-about-convicted-sex-offender

    He is back in Oregon!
The link below will provide you with his photo. I don't understand what makes this ok, first of all releasing him and then bringing him back into a community that he assaulted women in the past. http://www.co.benton.or.us/sheriff/community/sex_offender_notification.php
