Rep. Gosar seeks limit to EPA power over Navajo power plants

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- U.S. Rep. Paul Gosar has secured approval of an amendment aimed at preserving jobs and revenue from a Navajo Nation power plant and its associated coal mine.

But the amendment offered in a package of bills that passed Friday in the House has no chance of getting through the Democratic-led Senate. Barack Obama also has threatened a veto.

Gosar introduced the amendment and co-sponsored another to limit the authority of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under the Clean Air Act. The amendments are part of the "Stop the War on Coal Act."

The EPA is considering whether to require upgrades at the Navajo Generating Station to control haze-causing nitrogen oxide emissions. Gosar, who is seeking a second term in Congress, said doing so would force the plant's closure and devastate tribal communities.
