PHOENIX -- Getting the dirt on the Phoenix-Scottsdale area apparently is easier than imagined.

Travel and Leisure magazine has rated that area No. 19 on its dirtiest U.S. cities list.

Magazine editors' criteria included trash collection, rodent population and reader feedback.

Phoenix's venture into the top 20 got a push from its spot on the American Lung Association's list of most air-polluted cities.

New York City was No. 1 in grime, followed by New Orleans, Baltimore, Los Angeles and Atlanta.

    Actually not so bad
Considering Phoenix is the 5th largest city in the country. Lots of smaller cities are much dirtier.

    Garbage collection and rodent problem
Perhaps it is the proximity to the border that is the problem. We try to collect the garbage and rodents, and return them to the dump but the Feds get in the way.
