The Phoenix Open golf tournament hit the sweet spot for Arizona's economy, pouring $222 million into the state's coffers, according to an impact study from Arizona State University's W.P. Carey School of Business.

The report, released Tuesday, said out-of-towners who attended the tournament spent $89.7 million locally. Direct sales tax revenue gave the state $5.5 million.

The Thunderbirds, who host the tournament that's known as the "greatest and greenest show on grass," authorized the report.

The 2013 Waste Management Phoenix Open is scheduled for the TPC of Scottsdale Jan. 28-Feb. 3.
