PHOENIX -- An E. coli scare in San Tan Valley has residents upset with the way the utilities company handled notification.

Johnson Utilities informed residents early Wednesday that presence of the bacteria had been found in the water several days earlier. It recommended boiling tap water before drinking.

The company made the discovery Aug. 18 during routine sampling. Subsequent retesting produced negative results.

In a statement released in the afternoon, the company said, "The drinking water rules require a drinking water system to issue the warning if any resamples are positive for total coliform" but that the initial positive results were "believed to be false since they contradicted the results of our previous regular sampling."

The statement went on to say that, "Water systems do get contaminated from time to time; however, in this case, we believe there never was any contamination."

Customers remain agitated.

The school district had asked families to include bottled water with their children's lunches.

Schools in the Florence school district were taking precautions as well.

    Johnson Utilities
I have lived in the Johnson Ranch/Anthem area for almost 7 years. They drive me crazy!! I was NOT notified by Johnson Utilities of the problem. I was notified by the school my son goes to. I find it very unprofessional I find out of a possible water contamination from the school not the company. They knew of a possible problem with the water on the August, 16 when it tested positive for E. coli and they still did not notify anyone until August 21. Come on! So basically, my family (and my animals) have been possibly drinking contaminated water for almost a week. unreal

    San Tan Valley water
Imagine that! We weren't notified either. We have lived in San Tan Valley for several years. If we were as diligent in paying our bill as they are in notifiying customers of a compromised water supply, our water would have been shut off long ago. Evidently we have been using this more-foul-than-usual water for days. Betcha Johnson Utilities employees weren't.

    Warned?
3 households on my cul de sac have been ill with E. coli symptoms for 2/3 weeks. yes, we live in San Tan Valley and NO, we weren't warned or notified until this morning on the news!!! Don't you other residents get tired of Johnsons lies and cover ups? Let's get a choice of Utility Companies in our area and put a stop to the monopoly and manipulation that is G. Johnson.

    No notification
I live in the San Tan Valley "served" by Johnson Utilities, I have not received a notice from Johnson Utilities but I will check the snail mail box tomorrow, I found out via social media last night that I have been showering, eating food cooked with, drinking etc .... water unfit to consume for 6 days ( now some reports have changed and are reporting tests done on the 18th, really Saturday now, not Wednesday the 16th), in either case it demonstrates the level of integrity of this company.

    We were notified the 21st
Water on the 16th tested positive for E-Coli, but it had to be retest to confirm the contamination. As soon as it was confirmed the notice went out to the media and schools because it's the fastes way to get the word out. If you think going door to door for over 50,000 people is feasible, you're dreaming. They did what was required by the law, look it up. Individuals need to also assume some level of preparedness and keep food and water for emergencies like this. I live in STV and was informed in lots of ways.
