Initiative on sales tax hike certified for ballot

PHOENIX -- An initiative measure for a sales tax increase has been
certified to appear on Arizona's November ballot after checks of petitions found
enough valid voter signatures.
Secretary of State Ken Bennett certified the so-called ``Quality Education and Jobs Act'' on Wednesday, a day after the Arizona Supreme ruled that the measure can appear on the ballot despite a paperwork error with a campaign filing.
The initiative proposes a penny-on-the-dollar increase to take effect in 2013 upon the expiration of a same-size temporary increase.
Revenue would be directed to education, transportation projects and programs for children. Initiative supporters say those programs, projects and services are underfunded.
Meanwhile, opponents led by state Treasurer Doug Ducey filed papers creating an opposition campaign. Ducey calls a tax increase burdensome and unnecessary
