PHOENIX -- Phoenix police are stepping up patrols around the city's three Sikh temples in the wake of a deadly shooting at a Wisconsin temple.

Police spokesman James Holmes told the Arizona Republic that authorities also are in contact with local Sikh leaders.

Authorities said a 40-year-old Army veteran strode into a suburban Milwaukee temple Sunday and opened fire without saying a word. When the shooting ended, six victims lay dead and three others, including a police officer, were injured.

Holmes called the shooting senseless and extended prayers to the victims and their families on behalf of the department.

He said the patrols will continue until further notice.
