PHOENIX — A Surprise police officer working with the Drug Enforcement Agency has been placed on leave after fatally shooting a man who fired at officers.

Police say the shooting occurred about 6:30 a.m. Thursday when a special consortium of officers assisting the DEA on drug cases tried to serve a search warrant at a central Phoenix home.

DEA officials say the operation was part of a drug-trafficking investigation and that the home was a suspected "stash house."

The Arizona Republic says police haven't released the officer's name.

He's on paid administrative leave, the protocol when investigating an officer-involved shooting.
