Peter L. Tuchalski (Phoenix Police Department)

PHOENIX -- An off-duty Phoenix police officer who died in a fatal collision Thursday on Interstate 17 has been identified.

Detective Peter L. Tuchalski was killed mid-afternoon just south of Black Canyon City. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Department of Public Safety spokesman Carrick Cook, cause of the accident may have been a gust of wind that caught the trailer being towed by Tuchalski's truck. The trailer hit a guard rail, which then sent the trailer and truck tumbling.

Tuchalski had more than 15 years with the department and was assigned to the Family Investigation Bureau. He investigated domestic-violence cases.

He is survived by his wife and their two teenage children.
