Suspected Colorado shooting suspect applied to University of Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. The suspected gunman in the Colorado movie theater rampage was an unsuccessful applicant for graduate school last year at the University of Arizona.

School officials confirmed Friday that James Holmes was invited to spend a weekend on the Tucson campus in February 2011.

They say the 24-year-old Holmes was one of a dozen hopefuls from around the country vying to get into the university's graduate program in neuroscience for advanced study of the brain and nervous system.

The Arizona Daily Star reported that the Feb. 3-6 weekend was described on the school's website as an event for "outstanding neuroscience applicants."

University spokesman Johnny Cruz said Holmes "applied for the UA's graduate program in neuroscience and was not accepted."

Authorities say Holmes instead enrolled at the University of Colorado-Denver.
