TUCSON, Ariz. — The suspected gunman in the Colorado movie theater rampage was an unsuccessful applicant for graduate school last year at the University of Arizona.

School officials confirmed Friday that James Holmes was invited to spend a weekend on the Tucson campus in February 2011.

They say the 24-year-old Holmes was one of a dozen hopefuls from around the country vying to get into the university's graduate program in neuroscience for advanced study of the brain and nervous system.

The Arizona Daily Star reported that the Feb. 3-6 weekend was described on the school's website as an event for "outstanding neuroscience applicants."

University spokesman Johnny Cruz said Holmes "applied for the UA's graduate program in neuroscience and was not accepted."

Authorities say Holmes instead enrolled at the University of Colorado-Denver.

Gee, I wonder if he came here...
So, if he popped into a theater here in Arizona with all our "liberal" gun laws, he probably would have had a bigger arsenal. All the gun totin rednecks ranging in age from 16 to 96, would have pulled out their guns and fired back in the darkened theater. The net result is that about 10 times more people would have eaten a bullet or two. Welcome to the wild west!

This isn't relevant. The media is so hungry to write anything.

Exactly, a totally irrelevant piece of information - and a ridiculously big stretch to get the local angle.

You really think that this is about the availability of guns? Then your a just as sad as those people saying "if I was there I'd"... We should all think about this, this young man was sick, real sick and he'd prolly have done this with what ever he could get. He also used house hold chemicals to booby-trap his apartment. You want to outlaw drain o as well? You nor anybody else can say what would of happened just are just now finding out what happened. Lets just all keep all these victims in our prayers
