PHOENIX - A man is hospitalized in serious condition after being shot in the chest by a Phoenix policeman after he allegedly attacked the officer.

Police say the 26-year-old suspect was shot Tuesday near a school in south Phoenix.

They say the officer pulled over and asked the man if he needed assistance after observing the man acting strange. That's when police say the man walked over to the officer's unmarked car and began punching him in the face.

Police say the officer shot the suspect, who continued to walk toward the school and then collapsed.

The name of the suspect hasn't been released. Police say he'll be booked into jail on felony charges after he's released from the hospital.

The unidentified police officer was treated for facial lacerations and minor injuries.

    Undercover....
Sounds like someone was poking their nose where in didn't belong and did not identify himself, and started getting his butt handed to him. Listen, I like officers, but when your unmarked and not identified, someone starts questioning me, I am armed and I will protect myself. I am tired of undercover cops thinking their above the law, and try to do things on the sneak. If he would have identified himself apon first contact, things would have turned out different, i suspect. and yes, i still support law enforcement.

just because it says the officer was in an unmarked car does not mean the officer was not in uniform. stop jumping to conclusions and being so small minded. unmarked does not mean or even come close to meaning undercover. d.p.s uses unmarked cars on the street all the time.

You sir are an idiot for thinking that the officer did not identify himself. Most unmarked cars contain officers in full uniform, so how do you know he was undercover? As Loubo said, like you were there??? And you really shouldn't rely on KTAR for all the details, they tend to leave most of the story out.

    OK then, to everyone.
Going by what was reported, the police said they believe the suspect knew he was an officer by the comments he was making to him, there by leading us to believe he was not in uniform or that he announced who he was, read the info given, and how they report it on KTAR, grated, I was not there, and can only go by the information given. Thank you KTAR, and this is way we request as much information given as possible in your news stories. Good day to all:-)

So it is ok to go up to someone and start punching them in the face? Why do you need to "protect" yourself if someone is questioning you? Are you by chance with the Occupy Movement?

Not a chance with the Occupy Movement, they don't exist to me. My question is, if the report is correct, would you be ok with someone, in plain clothes comming up to you on the street and start questioning you? I am not! and that is about enough on this subject for me, time to move on. :-)

KTAR is missing parts of this story. Earlier a lady called 911 because he was running around in the street and he came up to her car and tried to get in. From AZcentral: "The sergeant stopped his car and partially rolled down his window to ask the man why he was in the road and if he needed any help. The 26-year-old began making offensive comments directed at the sergeant and reached in the car and opened the passenger-side door. The man entered the sergeant's car and began striking him in the face. "

    Unmarked?
If you can't tell the difference, or spot an 'unmarked' police car a mile away, you are just dumb as a rock.
