Public, Hispanics differ on immigration law

PHOENIX — Many Americans who support Arizona’s immigration law are also
open to a creating a path to U.S. citizenship, according to a recent survey.
The Pew Hispanic Center report said 58 percent of American adults approve the
2010 immigration law, on which the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling Monday.
However, the survey found 42 percent of adults want an equal balance of tough
immigration enforcement and access to citizenship for the country’s
approximately 11 million illegal immigrants.
About 75 percent of Hispanics surveyed said they disapprove of the Arizona
statute. The survey said 35 percent of Hispanics want a path to citizenship and
border restrictions to be given equal weight.
