PHOENIX -- The head of the Arizona Construction Association said Arizona lost almost 210,000 construction workers during the recession.

The shortage of carpenters, framers, masons and roofers is reportedly causing builders to poach the competition's crews by offering more money.

"If they're trying to pull from everywhere, it tells me the recent appetite for residential construction is now escalating and the people aren't there," said David Jones, president of the Arizona Construction Association.

Jones said many construction workers left because of the state's tough immigration laws and may not return. On top of this, the younger generation is more interested in technology jobs than backbreaking work in construction.

"They're young and they're bright but not interested in working with their hands and minds in a physically demanding job," he said.

Jones said returning American troops may be an option to fill the construction jobs.

"That may well be a reservoir that we will rely on for skilled labor," he said. "They have construction skills, know how to operate equipment and want to work when they come home."

    Good Luck !
They recession ruined a lot of good working people. Those people went out and found other ways to make a living. They lost everything they worked for and accumulated and aren't interested in doing that again. You'll NEVER find the kind of workers you lost because those people have adapted to less money and less toys etc. Train the illegals to do that kind of work now because the good ones are long gone and will never return... I know because I'm one of the ones that you'll NEVER see again.

We will need some good luck
Yes, Japricka, the recession did ruin a lot of good working people. It hit Arizona construction especially hard, and the highly skilled workers like you will be missed when the industry revives. Funny, though, how KTAR suggests that SB 1070 is the reason for our shortage of skilled construction workers. Just like Bush is the reason for our current economic collapse and national dissolution.

If you start workers off at $25 to $30 per hour they will show up to do that hard work in the heat and they will be here legally too. Sounds like a "win-win" for everybody !!

Do you think before you post?
I read Thomas H's post and have to ask the question. Did you think before you posted. Or do you normally post crap that isn't backed by anything but your worthless opinion. I worked in the industry 12 years ago and don't think houses that were built by so called illegals are falling down. They were supervised and their workmanship was about the same as any other person. Your just filled with hate and decide to randomly spew hate in hopes of hooking someone. Your comments should not be taken seriously.

I hope these builders don't send anybody to Mexico to round up workers or the ones that left for Mexico come rushing back. The illegals are the ones that flooded the construction industry and caused thousands of American workers to lose their good paying jobs along with putting a lot of smaller companies out of business because the ones that hired the illegals under bid contracts by hiring illegals.
