Tutor: Selection of correct tutor is essential

The owner of a Valley tutor company said it is essential for the parents of a student in need of a tutor is to be sure they are choosing the correct one.

“There’s a difference between a really effective tutor, who has expert-level knowledge and incredible communication skills and maybe an average teacher,” Chuck Cohn of Varsity Tutors told News/Talk 92.3 KTAR’s Mac & Gaydos on Thursday.

Cohn said that classroom teachers often employ a variety of teaching methods, but a tutor can offer a much more focused curriculum.

“A great tutor can adapt their teaching style to the needs of that individual student and explain it one way, and if that’s not effective, do it another way,” he said.

Cohn said that his company aims to make good students become great and that tutors can help student move from an A- to an A+.
