MESA, Ariz. — A popular recreation center in Mesa reopened Wednesday, less than a year after being damaged by storms.

It was Sept. 8 last year when a 1,000-year storm flooded Broadway Road and sent water funneling into the Broadway Recreation Center near Mesa Drive.

“I walked into the gym and saw standing water on a gym floor,” said Lane Gram with Arizona Disable Sports, which manages the city-owned recreation center.

Gram said the floor soon buckled and was ruined.

Thanks to the City of Mesa’s insurance and some donations, Gram said just nine months later the center has a new basketball court floor and several other upgrades.

“We have bright new lights, we have new paint on the walls, we have cleaned carpets and a lot of little things like that that really added up and make the facility look nice,” she said.

Gram said the facility is important to many local amateur sports leagues as well as a nearby school that uses the facility as its gymnasium, so she said she is glad to have the facility back up and running.

We want to hear from you.
