$7.3M in lawyer fees sought in MCSO profile case

PHOENIX — Attorneys who won a racial-profiling lawsuit against the
Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office want a judge to order the county to pay them
more than $7 million in fees.

Oral arguments are scheduled Aug. 26 at the federal courthouse in Phoenix. Each
side will be given 20 minutes to present their argument.

A federal judge ruled in May 2013 that the sheriff’s office and Sheriff Joe
Arpaio singled out Latinos, and that deputies unreasonably prolonged detentions.

The $7.3 million was requested in an October 2013 filing by nine attorneys,
including several each from the American Civil Liberties Union and the
international law firm of Covington & Burling LLP.

The motion cites six years of litigation since the case was filed in 2007,
including two years of pretrial fact-finding and a seven-day trial.
