Memorial set for federal judge from Arizona

PHOENIX — Federal judges plan to honor U.S. District Judge Robert C.
Broomfield at a special memorial session at the Phoenix federal courthouse next
week.

Broomfield died of cancer on July 10 at a Phoenix hospice. He was 81.

Broomfield was nominated by President Ronald Reagan and confirmed in 1985. He
served as chief judge of the Arizona district from 1994 to 1999. He assumed
senior status in 1999 but continued to take cases until he fell ill several
months ago.

Broomfield was born in Detroit and served as an Air Force pilot before earning
his law degree from the University of Arizona in 1961.

He is survived by his wife and two adult children.

The memorial is set for 3 p.m. on July 23 at the Sandra J. O’Connor Courthouse.
