Phoenix ranks low in walkability, but possibility for change

PHOENIX — A close look at how easy it is to get around in the Phoenix area revealed it is not a very “walkable” city.
According to a study by Smart Growth America, Phoenix’s walkability ranks 29 out of the 30 largest metro areas in the nation.
The cities were ranked according to their current urban walkable areas, including office and retail space.
However, the study also predicted change ahead for Phoenix.
The current light rail system serving uptown, downtown Phoenix and Tempe, along with a successful revitalization of downtown, are expected to move Phoenix up to 12th.
Orlando, Fla. was at the bottom of the list. Washington D.C., was number one in the study followed by New York, Boston, San Francisco and Chicago, respectively.
