Arizona activist opposes subpoena in immigration case

PHOENIX — Lawyers for a prominent GOP activist in Arizona are asking a
judge to throw out a subpoena issued to their client by civil rights groups that
are challenging the state’s 2010 immigration law.

Attorneys for Rob Haney said the subpoena should be rejected because it was
improperly delivered.

The challengers said they want access to letters, emails and memos between
lawmakers and advocates for tougher immigration enforcement to see why
proponents of the law believed it needed to be passed.

They are seeking documents to back up their claim that the law was passed with
a discriminatory intent.

Former Sen. Russell Pearce, the driving force behind the law, and Rep. John
Kavanagh, a key advocate for the law, are scheduled to be deposed in the case
next month.
