Ex-Boy Scouts leader accused in Phoenix sex case

PHOENIX — A former Boy Scouts leader in Phoenix has been arrested for
alleged sexual abuse involving male juveniles that date back more than three
decades.

Phoenix police say 65-year-old William “Bill” Challberg is facing 26 charges
in the case.

They say 51-year-old Julian Mendoza is facing 15 charges.

Police say Mendoza lived with Challberg in Phoenix where many of alleged
offenses occurred between 1983 and 2003.

The two men are accused of having inappropriate contact with at least five boys
who ranged in age from 9 to 16.

Police say one of the alleged victims was a Boy Scout while the others were
neighborhood children and friends.

Challberg was later forced to resign from the Boy Scouts of America.

It was unclear Thursday if either Challberg or Mendoza has a lawyer.
