White House press secretary Jay Carney steps down

PHOENIX — White House press secretary Jay Carney stepped down from his office on Friday.

In a press conference, President Barack Obama called Carney a “trusted friend and adviser,” though he does not know the next step in Carney’s career.

Carney said he will step down about mid-June.

“I haven’t made any decisions yet,” he told the assembled media.

Carney’s replacement, Josh Earnest, has served Obama as the principal deputy press secretary.

Carney’s resignation comes on the back of the resignation of former Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki, who was embattled by scandal over the past few months.
