TUCSON, Ariz. — Authorities say a suspected bank robber was fatally shot by Tucson police after getting a box of ammunition from his vehicle.
Police also said 35-year-old Santiago Avila was a fugitive wanted in California in connection with an assault on a peace officer.
His name was released by police Friday after his relatives were notified.
Police said they received a 911 call about a robbery in progress Thursday afternoon.
Officers arrived to see a man matching the suspect’s description walking out of the bank with a handgun.
Police said he ignored commands to stop and drop the gun.
He instead went to his SUV, got a box of ammunition and began walking back to the bank’s front door when officers shot him.
Police said the man died in the parking lot.
