Arizona Senate mulls latest budget deal from House

PHOENIX — The Arizona Legislature is entering the fourth week of budget
talks in a standoff, with Senate President Andy Biggs still to decide if he’ll
take up the latest offer from the House.

Gov. Jan Brewer signed off on the House plan and Speaker Andy Tobin presented
it to the Senate on Thursday, but Biggs declined to assign senators to a conference
committee and promptly adjourned for the weekend.

The differences in the $9.2 billion spending plans are relatively tiny, so it
is a possible a deal could be cut quickly.

Biggs said last week he wanted to see the amendments in writing and for Tobin
to provide proof that he has to votes to pass the deal.

The Legislature returns from the weekend Monday afternoon.
