Wounded Sheriff’s posse member brought out of coma

PHOENIX — The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said a volunteer posse member wounded
in a New Year’s Eve shooting has been brought out of medically induced coma.

Sheriff’s spokesman Joaquin Enriquez told a local TV station that Phillip Grigg, 63, came out of the coma over the weekend.

Enriquez said Grigg remained in critical condition in the intensive
care unit and had a stomach infection.

Grigg was shot while trying to help a Phoenix police officer confront a suspect
in the east Phoenix robbery of two strip-club employees.

Officer Scott Sefranka was shot but has left the hospital.

Enriquez said Grigg has been able to communicate with his family.
