US, Mexico soccer teams to play in Glendale

Feb 13, 2014, 3:21 PM | Updated: 3:22 pm

PHOENIX — The United States and Mexico national soccer teams will square off in Glendale, Ariz. later this year, a release said.

The teams are scheduled to play April 2 at University of Phoenix Stadium at 8 p.m.

“Games against Mexico are always special for the players and for the fans,” said U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann. “We expect that it will be an amazing atmosphere in Phoenix with supporters for both teams, and it’s great to have an opportunity to play before the start of the World Cup. You couldn’t ask for a better experience to help with our preparations.”

The match will be used by both teams to help decide which players the countries will bring to the World Cup in Brazil.

“We are going to be watching our players very carefully before making final decisions on the roster for the World Cup, so this will be a great benchmark to see where they are at and how they compete against our biggest rivals,” Klinsmann said.

The match will be the first meeting of the teams since September 2013, when the U.S. secured its place in Brazil with a 2-0 win.

Tickets are scheduled to go on sale Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. on ussoccer.com and ticketmaster.com.
