Tempe police ID suspect who jumped off a bridge

TEMPE, Ariz. — Authorities have released the name of a carjacking and
robbery suspect who jumped off a freeway bridge in Tempe last week.

Tempe police said Thursday that 44-year-old Edmund Powers remains hospitalized
with severe injuries.

Police say Powers allegedly carjacked a vehicle from a woman in Tempe and then
allegedly robbed an adult bookstore in east Mesa.

Tempe police chased the stolen vehicle and Arizona Department of Public Safety
officers used “stop sticks” to disable it on the Loop 202 freeway in north
Tempe last Friday morning.

Police say Powers got out of the car and leaped over a wall on the side of the
freeway, landing below the eight-story-tall bridge in a river bed.

Officers found Powers below the bridge and he’s been hospitalized ever since.
