The U.S. Attorney’s Office said 27-year-old Dumitru Doban pleaded guilty to
wire fraud conspiracy Thursday in federal court in Rochester.
Prosecutors said Doban, a citizen of Moldova, was part of a group that posted
vehicles for sale online and collected payments through bogus websites.
Authorities said 18 people from Arizona, New York, California, Nevada, North Carolina and Canada sent a total of $257,000 in payments but never received
Charges against a second Moldovan man are pending.
Doban faces up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced in April.
