Lawyers request new trial in Chandra Levy case

WASHINGTON (AP) – Lawyers for a man convicted of killing Washington intern Chandra Levy asked a judge to grant a new trial in the case, a request that had been expected for months and won’t be ruled on for many more.
A lawyer for Ingmar Guandique made the brief oral motion for a new trial during a court hearing Wednesday in Washington.
Lawyers have been discussing information since late 2012 that could discredit a key prosecution witness, Guandique’s one-time cellmate Armando Morales. Morales testified at trial that Guandique confided his responsibility for Levy’s 2001 murder.
Guandique’s lawyers will make a formal written motion for a new trial early next year based on the information about Morales. Government lawyers will then respond, and a hearing on the issue is expected to follow.
