Mesa police release 911 call in mom’s killing

MESA, Ariz. — Authorities in Mesa have released tapes of the 911 call of a
man whose teenage stepson is accused in a killing.

The 16-year-old boy is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder. He’s
accused of killing his mother, concealment of a dead body and tampering with
evidence.

His name is being withheld by The Associated Press because he’s a juvenile.

The name of the stepfather is redacted from a 911 recording released Monday by
Mesa police.

He says the teen hit him in the head with a frying pan when he came home on
Oct. 26.

Police later found the body of 36-year-old Tina Helms Spencer in a backyard
shed at the family’s property.

Authorities believe Spencer was struck with a frying pan and a hammer and also
was choked.
