PHOENIX — The only member of the Granite Mountain Hotshots to survive the
Yarnell Hill Fire that killed his 19 fellow team members on June 30 says he
won’t second-guess the decisions that his colleague made that day.
Brendan McDonough told KNPX that he’d welcome any
lessons learned from the yet-to-be-released report from the official
But McDonough says he won’t question the decisions that his colleagues made and
stands by his colleagues.
McDonough was serving as the team’s lookout on a nearby ridge when shifting
winds drove flames that forced him to retreat.
Winds then blew flames over the position of the rest of the team after they
descended down a ridgeline and into a brush-filled canyon.
