TEMPE, Ariz. — With the start of the school year, Tempe police have teamed
up with Arizona State University to prevent alcohol-related crimes and violence.

As part of the program, uniformed police officers from multiple agencies will
increase patrols, DUI enforcement and liquor law inspections for licensed
Tempe Police Chief Tom Ryff says the city recognizes the negative effects and
safety concerns associated with youth alcohol use and loud and unruly parties.
Ryff pointed to changes in the city code approved by councilors to hold party
hosts more accountable for illegal activity occurring at their residences.
Law enforcement officials say the operation is also expected to boost traffic
and pedestrian safety as students return to school.
