Arizona wildlife agency adopting out tortoises

PHOENIX — Looking for a new pet but no time for daily walks? Have
allergies to fur or feathers? How about a desert tortoise?

The Arizona Game and Fish Department is looking for people to adopt the
reptiles
as unique alternatives to traditional family pets.

Cristina Jones, the agency’s turtle program coordinator, said increased
backyard breeding has led to them becoming overpopulated in captivity, and there
aren’t enough homes for all of them.

The tortoises are native to the region, can grow to be about 15 pounds and can
live up to 100 years.

They are only available for adoption to residents in the species’ native range,
which includes the Phoenix, Bullhead City, Kingman, Lake Havasu, Tucson, and
Yuma areas.

There is a limit
of one tortoise per household.
