Dead man ID’d in officer-involved shooting in Yuma

YUMA, Ariz. — Authorities have released the name of a man who died after an officer-involved shooting in Yuma.

Yuma County Sheriff’s officials identified the man as 42-year-old Rafael Salas
Adame.

His probation officer contacted the sheriff’s office about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday to
say Adame was threatening to harm himself.

Sheriff’s officials tried several times to contact Adame by cellphone and at
his home, but found only an empty handgun case.

Using a cellphone tracking system, authorities located him holding a handgun in
the remote stretch of agricultural land northeast of Yuma.

Deputies said they told Adame to drop his weapon several times. When he failed
to do so, four deputies opened fire.

Adame was pronounced dead at Yuma Regional Medical Center.

Sheriff’s officials said Wednesday that the shooting remains under
investigation.
