Business leaders mull change in Tucson’s nickname

TUCSON, Ariz. — Leaders of the Tucson Metro Chamber have proposed
to its members changing the city’s nickname from “Old Pueblo” to a name that
reflects the city’s forward-thinking mindset.

The Arizona Daily Star reported that the chamber has no
immediate plans to create a new slogan, but floated the idea to see if business
and tourism officials agreed it is time for a change.

Chamber’s board members Kurt Wadlington and Mike Varney said a new mindset
toward prosperity is overdue.

In an interview, Varney told the Daily Star that it was a chamber member who
suggested that Tucson had grown beyond its nickname.

Varney said the chamber embraced the history and culture of Tucson, but the city
can’t have an “Old Pueblo” mindset in a 21st-century economy.
