Opponents try to force vote on Arizona election changes

PHOENIX — A group opposed to a new law overhauling the early voting
process in Arizona and making it more difficult for third-party candidates to
get on the ballot has filed for a citizen’s referendum.

The Protect Your Right to Vote Committee filed the referendum Monday. If it
collects 86,405 valid signatures by Sept. 12 the law will be put on hold until
the November 2014 general election.

The legislation backed by Republicans and signed by Gov. Jan Brewer last month
seeks to trim Arizona’s permanent early voting list, limit who may return
voters’ mail ballots and require more signatures for third-party candidates to
get on the ballot.

Democratic lawmakers called it a thinly veiled effort to keep Republicans in
power by creating new hurdles for some candidates and low-income voters.
