Ex-Arizona resident get life sentences in 2004 RI killing

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A 36-year-old Rhode Island man who lived in Arizona
under an assumed identity for years has received consecutive life sentences for
a 2004 murder that occurred during a botched robbery attempt in Providence.

The state attorney general’s office says a judge on Monday sentenced Ramon
Virola to life in prison for first-degree murder. Virola got a second life
sentence on a charge of using a firearm during the commission of a violent
crime.

A jury convicted him in March of killing Christopher Nelson as Nelson tried to
wrestle the gun away during a robbery attempt at his Federal Hill apartment.

Virola was arrested in 2011 in Arizona, where authorities say he was living
under an assumed identity. He had been one of Rhode Island’s most wanted
fugitives.
