Arizona guardsman sentenced in $1M drug case

SALEM, Mass. — A sergeant in the Arizona National Guard who served in Iraq
has been sentenced to three years in a Massachusetts prison after pleading
guilty to his role in a scheme to move $1 million worth of cocaine from Mexico
to Canada.

Gerardo Flores of Tucson, Ariz., was sentenced Monday in Salem Superior Court
on drug charges.

The 29-year-old Flores was one of three men arrested at a Peabody hotel in
December 2011 by Massachusetts police acting on a tip from the Royal Canadian
Mounted Police. The cases against the other two men are pending.

Authorities said they were moving nearly 25 pounds of cocaine.

The Salem News reported that the judge took into
account Flores’ military service at sentencing.

Flores’ lawyer called his client’s involvement in the scheme an aberration.
