Gilbert to beef up security at town’s water tower

PHOENIX — After a man scaled to the top of Gilbert’s water tower, town
officials are taking steps to improve security and block access to the 120-foot
landmark.

Workers have added a metal plate to cover the ladder on one of the tower’s
legs.

Gilbert officials say the parks department has resolved to double-check a
padlock and chain on the plate, which will be improved or replaced if needed.

A shirtless man believed to be under the influence of drugs was seen climbing
to the tower’s top on Monday.

Police surrounded the tower and arrested the suspect after a nearly two-hour
standoff.

The Arizona Republic reports that the 35-year-old man
is facing charges of criminal trespassing, criminal damage and false reporting
to a law enforcement agency.
