PHOENIX — Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox is urging Republican
Gov. Jan Brewer to veto a bill requiring cities and counties to sell guns turned
over to police at community buyback events rather than having them destroyed.
Wilcox sent a letter to Brewer Wednesday pleading with her to veto the bill and
keep the guns from returning to the streets where they could be used for violent
The Arizona House and Senate have approved House Bill 2455. Republican backers
say destroying guns turned over to local governments is a waste of taxpayer
Wilcox is a Democrat who champions gun buybacks and survived being shot in the
buttocks at the end of a 1997 Board meeting. She says the bill would force the
resale of guns the owners wanted destroyed.
