Mattel’s ‘Mexico Barbie’ creates controversy

Apr 11, 2013, 8:25 PM | Updated: 8:53 pm

Mattel’s new “Mexico Barbie” has fired up a controversy regarding cultural diversity.

According to NBC News, the company said that Mexico Barbie comes with a Chihuahua and a passport. Considering the ongoing immigration dispute, the passport has particularly raised questions even though the accessory has been included with every Barbie in the “Dolls of the World” collection.

“We consulted with the Mexican Embassy on the Dolls of the World Mexico Barbie, especially with respect to the selection of the Chihuahua,” the brand told TODAY.com in a statement. “Our goal with the Dolls of the World Mexico Barbie, as well as the entire Dolls of the World Collection, is to celebrate cultural differences and tradition, introducing girls to the world through play.

The Mattel website indicates that the doll’s exterior design “teaches girls about the culture, traditions, and ancestral dress of Mexico.”
